Living for the Lord, Isaac Fu

In December of 1996 I graduated from the University of Washington with a bachelor degree in zoology. Approximately two years earlier, while attending a Christian conference, I felt the Lord calling me to attend the Full-Time Training in Anaheim (FTTA) for a period of two years. So I began to make arrangements for going in the fall term of 1997. In April of that same year, after completing an examination for graduate school, I decided to go to Russia for three months before the Training started.

While in Russia, I had the opportunity to spend a considerable amount of time with several different believers serving the Lord there. I closely observed their living day to day. One brother that I stayed with for about two weeks had left the American dream to live in a small two bedroom flat. He left his job, his car, his house, and a formal education for his 8-year-old daughter. I could not help but think about this as I felt the cool breeze blow through the cracks of the window in the kitchen one evening. Winter was coming soon and I was reminded of how the hot water supply shut off for an entire month every year. I was not sure whether that month had passed or whether it was still coming but I was hoping for the former.

In another instance, when I was traveling in the South of Russia from Pita to Rostov by train, I asked another believer serving there when he was planning to return to the States. I will never forget his response as he looked me in the eye and said, “Brother, I am not going back. I will stay here serving the Lord until either I die or He returns.” Finding that hard to believe I asked him “What about your kids?” Again, this time he responded, “They will be Russian.” This left a deep impression on me. I realized that these brothers were absolutely consecrated to God for His eternal purpose (Ephesians 3:11). The only thing that mattered to them was the Lord and His will.

I returned to the States in August of 1997 and entered the FTTA two weeks later. The short time that I spent in Russia changed my life. I love all the believers there and I will never forget them.
